yeseros de piscina contains compositions made with field recordings of workmen refinishing swimming pools in Phoenix, Arizona during the fall of 2020. with almost as many pools as people (not quite!) in this area its a booming industry. the crews of around 15 were latino/mexican and they worked together using a mixture of signals and whistles. the old plaster was chipped away down to the concrete. mexican radio songs were played as the crew worked together laying the wet plaster in the hot sun. cement mixer trucks were stationed nearby to prepare the wet plaster. the plaster was transported to the pool via a system of wires. on occasion the workers burst into spontaneous song while they worked. sounds echo and reverberate of the bare concrete walls of the pool. repetition and movement of the sound are represented within the compositions by collage and loops. it's a sonic portrait of of a location, a time and a culture.
